Step 1: The "Why"

Quick Steps:
1 - Write a list of your motivators
2 - Envisage what life will be like once these are achieved
3 - Calculate what you need to earn and make concessions if possible

As with most things in life, your fledgling business venture will have a far greater chance of success if you're prepared.

The first step in preparing yourself to quit your day job is to think about what's motivating you to make this drastic change.

Do you want to work outside, rather than at a desk?
Do you want the freedom to work the hours you want?
Do you want more money?
Do you want to be your own boss?
Do you want to live in the Countryside?

Think about your motivating factors, then visualise what life will be like after you've achieved success. Maybe even write these down, as they'll be used as constant motivators to keep you going when things maybe aren't going as planned.

For me, the main drivers were:

- Free to plan my own schedule
- Living in the countryside with a log fire
- To have more spare time to spend with my family
- Travel more; fun and adventurous holidays

ACTION: Write down your motivators and think about how achieving these will change your life. This should be a very powerful exercise, which leaves you feeling energised and motivated; ready to begin working towards achieving this new way of life.

You really don't need to be in a dire situation, suffering in a job you despise, before you make the decision to pack it in and try something new. In fact, it's far more dangerous being in a job which you deem to be bearable rather than unbearable because it makes it so much harder to take action. After all, if your job really was unbearable, you'd probably have left some time ago!

Finally, we need to know what our goal is. How do we know when we've achieved our target? To find this out, we'll need to do some digging into our outgoings to find out how much money we spend on a monthly basis; this will be how much we need to earn. Alternatively, you could use this exercise to see what can be sacrificed in order to allow you to achieve your goal. It might be you can go from 2 holidays abroad each year down to 1 holiday abroad and 1 holiday in your own country. Making sacrifices like these will make it much easier to cover your outgoings and widen your options when it comes to picking an opportunity which meets your needs.

ACTION: Calculate your monthly outgoings; this figure will be your goal. If it seems a touch high, see what you can cut out (e.g. dinners out, holidays abroad, etc).
